Elias Shane Kincanon, 17, of Amarillo, Texas, is identified as the driver involved in a fatal wrong-way head-on crash that occurred early Tuesday morning on State Highway 136 in Potter County.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the collision happened around 5:51 a.m. on May 26, just south of El Rancho Road. Investigators say Kincanon was driving a 2016 Ford F-150 northbound in the southbound lanes when it struck a 2017 Ford Fusion driven by 18-year-old Tori Dakota Bunch of Panhandle.
The impact of the crash was extremely severe, causing major damage to both vehicles. Authorities reported that the Ford F-150 caught fire shortly after the collision. Bystanders acted quickly and pulled the teenage driver from the burning vehicle before it was fully engulfed, an act officials described as lifesaving.
Kincanon was transported to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo, where he is receiving treatment for serious injuries. Sadly, Tori Dakota Bunch was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of her injuries.
Officials confirmed both drivers were wearing seatbelts, though the force of the head-on impact was catastrophic. A secondary crash occurred shortly after when another vehicle struck the disabled pickup truck, but no additional injuries were reported.
The Texas DPS continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the wrong-way crash as the Panhandle community mourns the loss of a young life and processes the seriousness of the incident.
