The Sioux City community is mourning the passing of Cory Michael “Moose” Mozak, age 41, who died on May 23, 2026. His sudden death has left family, friends, former teammates, and many throughout the Siouxland area reflecting on a life defined by passion, dedication, and deep love for family, hockey, and community.
Born on September 28, 1984, in Sioux City, Iowa, Cory was the son of Jeanne (Hansen) and Tim Mozak. From a young age, he developed a strong connection to hockey, a sport that would shape much of his life and identity. He attended East High School before continuing his hockey journey in junior leagues in Helena, Montana. His commitment and talent eventually led him to the University of Wisconsin–Stout, where he played collegiate hockey and formed lifelong friendships with teammates who remember him as both a competitor and a loyal friend.

After returning to Sioux City, Cory remained deeply involved in the local hockey community. He dedicated his time to coaching youth programs, including Siouxland Youth Hockey and the Sioux City Metros, often working alongside his brothers. Through coaching, he shared not only his knowledge of the game but also his values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance, leaving a lasting impact on the young athletes he mentored.
Beyond hockey, Cory worked at Mozak’s Furniture & Flooring, the family business, before later joining Shaw Industries, a role that eventually took him and his family to St. Louis. In every chapter of his professional life, he was known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and the genuine relationships he built with those around him.
Above all else, Cory was a devoted father to his children—Kennedey, Kerrigan, and Collin Mozak. His family was the center of his world, and those closest to him describe him as a loving, present, and deeply caring father whose greatest joy came from spending time with his children. His legacy will live on most profoundly through them and the values he instilled in their lives.
Friends and loved ones remember Cory as charismatic, energetic, and full of life. Known for his larger-than-life personality and easy smile, he had a natural ability to connect with others and make people feel welcome. Whether on the ice, at work, or in everyday life, he left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
He is survived by his children, parents, siblings, extended family, and many close friends who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by several grandparents and a beloved uncle.
